Micropigmentation

Scalp micropigmentation—often shortened to SMP—is an advanced form of cosmetic micropigmentation.

Tiny deposits of carefully selected pigment are placed within the upper layers of the scalp to replicate the appearance of natural hair follicles.

When placed among existing hair, these microscopic impressions reduce the visible contrast between the scalp and surrounding hair. This can make thinning areas appear fuller and less noticeable.

What Does Treatment Feel Like?

Frequently Asked Questions

Will scalp micropigmentation grow my hair?

No. SMP does not stimulate hair growth or alter the hair follicle. It places tiny pigment impressions into the scalp to make thinning areas appear visually denser.

Will I need to shave my hair?

Not necessarily. Female density treatments and treatments performed between existing hair do not require the whole head to be shaved.

For a closely shaved follicle effect, the existing hair will need to be kept at an appropriate short length so the natural hair and micropigmentation remain visually consistent.

Will it look like a tattoo?

Correctly performed SMP should not look like a traditional tattoo.

The impressions are much smaller and are placed to replicate the appearance of individual follicles. Colour, spacing, depth and distribution are all carefully controlled to create a softer, more realistic result.

How many appointments will I need?

SMP is built gradually over a series of appointments. The exact number required will depend on the treatment area, degree of hair loss, skin response and desired density.

Can SMP cover complete hair loss?

It can be used to create the appearance of a closely shaved hairstyle across areas of significant or complete hair loss. Your suitability will depend on your scalp, expectations and the type and stability of your hair loss. It is also dependant on the result you would like to achieve. SMP is not suitable for everyone and is a tool along with many other treatments and hair systems.

Can you treat alopecia?

Some forms and patterns of alopecia may be suitable for SMP, but suitability must be assessed individually.

Active, unstable or unexplained hair loss may require medical assessment before cosmetic treatment is considered.

Can SMP cover a hair-transplant scar?

Suitable, fully healed hair-transplant scars can often be softened using scalp micropigmentation.

Because scar tissue can retain pigment differently, the likely result and treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation.

What happens if my natural hair continues to thin?

Your result may need to be extended or adapted if your hair-loss pattern changes.

Will the colour change?
